John Beebe—Eight Function-Attitude, Eight Archetype Model
12.1. John Beebe—Eight Function-Attitude, Eight Archetype Model
In this chapter, I present John Beebe’s—Eight Function-Attitude, Eight Archetype Model.
John Beebe is a Jungian analyst. Since 1971, he is running the Independent Medical Practice Professional in San Francisco. So, his professional career has been going on for 50 years. He is also a former president of the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco. As an expert in Jungian psychology, he gave lectures all over the world.
He is the author of several books and many publications. In short, John Beebe’s knowledge of Jungian psychology is impressive. I found out about it personally because I had the opportunity to participate in John Beebe’s workshop.
There are many interviews with John Beebe available on YouTube, which I highly recommend.
John Beebe is also an inspiration for further researches and enthusiasts. One of them is Richard Owen. Based on John Beebe’s Model, he created his own model, which he called—Personality Parts. Information about it we can find on these webpages:

Since there is a lot of information about John Beebe’s Model on the internet, I will present this Model briefly in this chapter. And next, I will match it to the Mandala of Characters.
The name “Eight Function-Attitude, Eight Archetype Model,” is telling us that we have two main components of this Model, namely:
— Eight Function-Attitude, and
— Eight Archetype.
As for the Eight Archetype, we can find such a diagram describing them in John Beebe's publications.

In the next diagram, I will show the above Model so that I can use later in Mandala of Characters.
Archetypes are divided into two orientations. Each of the orientations contains 4 archetypes. Besides archetypes, we can also see what role or function play particular archetypes. Specifically:
- EGO-SYNTONIC COMPLEXES—Basic Orientation.
(Simply put, the bright or more conscious sides of our personality).
#1. Hero / Heroine.
(Superior or Dominant Function)
#2. Father / Mother.
(Auxiliary Function)
#3. Puer / Puella.
(Tertiary Function).
(Puer and Puella are abbreviations of Latin phrases:
— puer aeternus, meaning the eternal boy
— puella aeterna, the eternal girl).
#4. Anima / Animus.
(Inferior Function).
(Shortly speaking,
— Anima is the feminine side of the man,
— Animus is the masculine side of the woman). - EGO-DYSTONIC COMPLEXES—Shadow.
(In other words, the darker side of our personality).
#5. Opposing Personality.
The same as #1—Hero / Heroine (Superior Function), but with opposite attitude.
#6. Senex / Witch.
The same as #2. Father / Mother (Auxiliary Function), but with opposite attitude.
#7. Trickster.
The same as #3 Puer / Puella (Tertiary Function), but with opposite attitude.
#8. Demonic Personality (or Daimonic Personality).
The same as #4. Anima / Animus (Inferior Function), but with opposite attitude.
To show where archetypes in our psyche are located and what these archetypes do for us, I will use the quote. This quote is in the form of the table below.
Archetypes and the Areas of Personality they Pattern | ||
---|---|---|
Conscious | ||
Hero / Heroine | Area of strength and pride | Organizes adaptation, initiates individuation |
Father / Mother | Area of fostering and protecting | Nurtures and protects others |
Puer / Puella | Area of immaturity and play | Endearing, vulnerable child who copes by improvising |
Anima / Animus | Area of embarrassment and idealization | Gateway to the unconscious |
Unconscious | ||
Opposing Personality | Area of frustration and challenge | Defends by offending, seducing, avoiding; self-critic |
Senex / Witch | Area of limit-setting and control | Defends by refusing, belittling, inactivating; sets limits |
Trickster | Area of manipulation and paradox | Mischievous, crates double binds, circumvents obstacles |
Demonic / Daimonic | Area of undermining and redemption | Undermines self and others; creates opportunities to develop integrity |

The second main element of John Beebe’s Model is function-attitudes. Function-attitudes, like the mentioned-above archetypes, are based on Jung’s psychology.
Function-attitudes are a combination of:
— four basic psychological functions (Intuition, Sensation, Thinking, and Feeling),
— and two general attitudes (Extraversion and Introversion).
Specifically, the function-attitudes are as follows:
- Ne—Extraverted Intuition
- Ni—Introverted Intuition
- Se—Extraverted Sensation
- Si—Introverted Sensation
- Te—Extraverted Sensation
- Ti—Introverted Sensation
- Fe—Extraverted Feeling
- Fi—Introverted Feeling
I think to show function-attitudes, I can use a diagram showing Jung’s types.
A diagram like the above is used to show Jung’s psychological types. And Jung’s types take their names from function-attitudes.
As we can see in the diagram above:
— introverted types are on the inner ring,
— and extraverted types are on the outer ring.
This arrangement symbolizes that the Introverted types are more oriented inward, and the Extraverted types are more oriented outward.
In the Mandala of Characters, all types of characters are arranged on one circle, so I rearranged the above function-attitudes.
Besides, to match the above function-attitudes to the Mandala of Characters, I made one more modification. It results from the fact that Mandala is divided into 12 main parts. These 12 main parts appeared because the Mandala combines:
— Ancient Typology, which is built based on Aristotle’s diagram of Classical Elements,
— Enneagram,
— and Jung’s “Psychological Types”.
When I was matching these three typologies together, in sum, they appeared in 12 main parts.
So, if we adjust the above diagram to the Mandala's arrangement, it will look like this.
In the main diagram of the Mandala of Characters, the function-attitudes will look as follows:
And here we have a fascinating thing. It means the 8 function-attitude are arranged in the same way as the so-called information elements in Socionics. In Socionics, we also have eight of these elements.
For comparison, I think it is worth recalling how the eight Socionics’ information elements look on the Mandala of Characters.
Further, the above eight elements are used differently in Socionics and in John Beebe’s Model. Although I suppose there are more analogies between these two typologies.
All in all, I am surprised that Socionics and John Beebe’s Model have analogical elements. However, I will leave the analysis of the similarities between these two typologies for later. And now, I will continue to present John Beebe’s Model.
In John Beebe’s Model, we have 8 archetypes and 8 function-attitudes. And for each character type, we have different combinations of archetypes and function-attitudes.
Below is a table that shows how the archetypes and function-attitudes are arranged for each personality type. These types are types that are used in the MBTI®.

The discovery of appropriate archetypes and function-attitudes for each type by John Beebe is his outstanding achievement. This is the impressive result of his many years of observation, acquired knowledge and professional experience, analyzes and reflections.
Next, using the table above, I show the diagrams for each personality type, which we can see in the table above.
Each of the types I will present in two diagrams. The first diagram will be John Beebe’s Model for a given type. And in the second diagram, I will show what a given type looks like on the Mandala of Characters.
1. ENTP.
2. INTJ.
3. ENFP.
5. ENFJ.
6. INFP.
7. ESFJ.
8. ISFP
9. ISFJ.
10. ESFP.
11. ISTJ
12. ESTP.
13. ISTP.
14. ESTJ.
15. INTP.
16. ENTJ.
Please note that John Beebe’s Model shows both conscious and unconscious sides of given types. Usually, personality theories show only the conscious side of each type. Among the personality theories I have learned, apart from John Beebe’s model, Socionics also shows our unconsciousness. Besides, the unconscious side of character types shows the Mandala of Characters, which I am creating here.
In addition to showing our types' unconsciousness, John Beebe uses archetypes to symbolically represent specific areas of our personality. The use of archetypes so much in one typology is unique and exceptional.
All in all, John Beebe’s model is a huge contribution to the development of the field of personalities. I think that this model will become more and more popular in the future.
