3.1. — The first square — types 1, 4, 12 and 7.
Above we have the square of types 1, 4, 12 and 7.
Arrows on the line segments that connect these four types show movement mainly towards Strong Self-Esteem. (This movement is analogical to the movement in the Enneagram towards comfort).
Next, I will shortly describe the above four types creating the first square. Please treat these descriptions only as a brief introduction. Or a small fragment of this, how particular types can look like? In more details, I will gradually describe types of characters in separate works with my studies, analysis, and synthesis.
3.1.1. — Type 1—Anger, Air, Introverted Intuition.
Typology | Name of the type in given typology |
---|---|
Enneagram | Type 1—Perfectionist |
Psychological Types by C. G. Jung | Introverted Intuitive Type |
Ancient System | No equivalent (the closest temperament—Sanguine) Element—Air Element feature—moist |
3.1.1.1. — Type 1 (Introverted Intuition) — Conscious State.
Type 1 in his Conscious State tries to do everything that is possible to be a unique specialist. For example, Type 1 can be a great cook who always makes good food or an exceptional guitar player, who systematically improves his playing, etc. So he is like an artist—a specialist. Even if he is doing some typical work, such as cleaning, with time he becomes the best and most organized among the workers with whom he works. Often he hopes that thanks to this he will be promoted to a better or higher position. Or he will be appreciated in some way. To emphasize his high competence, he likes to use criticism. And often he uses the opportunity to criticize as soon as he is able to get somebody’s attention. He will, of course, criticize another person than his listener in a particular moment. His criticism is also useful in diverting attention from the fact that he makes mistakes himself. And these mistakes he has often more than others because usually, he is very active.
He likes to plan and to organize the world around him. He wants to feel that he is able to manage in some way what is happening around him. The feeling that he can handle and arrange many, things, issues and problems is giving him satisfaction. To achieve this, he strives to get the highest possible artistry, mastery, craftsmanship or perfection in this what he is doing.
In general, he likes to use his perfectionism and criticism to shape the environment. He strives to get the order he considers appropriate. And he wants to play the central role in this environment. If he succeeds, he tries to maintain this state with his crucial (or critical) role in it.
If in this environment, there is someone who can threaten him foreground position, he starts to compete with him or tries to get rid of that person somehow. So, the person might expect a culminating wave of criticism.
Type 1 is also capable of using various verbal manipulations to reduce the value of his “competitor” who disturb Type 1 in being the best.
However, for his great favor, loyalty and devotion can count people who he considers his authority. Or at least a person who is valuable to his in some way. These may be, e.g., various experts and professionals in areas where he is not an expert. For people who will be his authorities and whom he will respect for something, he can be very helpful and friendly. He will even be able to defend their honor if he believes it is necessary.
3.1.1.2. — Type 1 (Introverted Intuition) — Strong Self-Esteem State (Power State).
In the Strong Self-Esteem State, Type 1 often becomes similar to type 4, that is, he becomes more romantic and emotional. He becomes more creative and spontaneous. He is able to cope with many difficult problems, or if he can get deeper into a problem and find the key to solve it.
Type 1 in this state often polishes his skills. And he becomes even more perfect. So, in Strong Self-Esteem State, he can become even more critical. His high criticism is based on the skills he got. He may believe that everything he mastered best. If so, in a sense, he has right to criticize others.
At that time he can catch somebody’s every smallest error and point it out. He often announces it to others. Thanks to this, he can show them his perfection. His comparison between somebody’s mistakes and his perfection often looks bigger than it really is. At least in his story that he presents to others.
The victim of his criticism is the most often somebody who is not present at the moment in the place where he is. If this person comes unexpectedly, he immediately becomes kind to him, even though he has just a moment ago mercilessly pointed him out in front of someone else. Then, as if nothing had happened, he is able to start criticizing another person, who at that moment is not there. It is remarkable that such behavior usually is unnoticeable to others. It is so factual and substantive that it is very difficult not to agree with it.
Also, in the Strong Self-Esteem State, Type 1 sometimes puts aside his strict roles. And suddenly he says that it is not right to be perfect all the time. Sometimes we should gratify or satisfy ourselves. In this behavior, he tries to be correct and moral. That is, among others, he tries to guide himself by what is right and good. Of course, right and good according to his point of view.
3.1.1.3. — Type 1 (Introverted Intuition) — Soft Self-Esteem State (Vulnerable State).
In the Soft Self-Esteem Type 1 often goes to type 7. In this state, he tries to be optimistic and enthusiastic. But can go too far in this attitude, and he can become an incurable optimist, improper trifler or amuse play-boy. If he is caught on doing something inappropriate, he tries to turn the situation into a joke. Or somehow prove that nothing serious has actually happened.
Often, in the Soft Self-Esteem State leads him a new situation where he cannot be an expert. Then he tries to be nice and bit childlike. He tries to figure out as soon as possible to get out of an unexpected and unwanted situation.
In general, he does not like the situation in which he is not the expert. Or he is upset by the situation in which he has to deal with people who are not as perfect as he is. His big irritation can cause people who dominate him, and people are able to avoid his influence.
3.1.1.4. — Type 1 (Introverted Intuition) — Unconscious State.
In the Unconscious State, Type 1 becomes type like opposite Type 12. That is, transforms into his opposition. In the Mandala of Characters type 12 is located on another side in comparison to type 1.
Then, unlike in his Conscious State, he can do something unfair. If we take a bad example, we tell about a situation when Type 1 is stealing something. At that time, he may explain his behavior that he had stolen something because somebody was wicked before to him or other people. So, actually, he may think that he did something right. For example, if he stole something from a large supermarket, he can tell that generally, he did something right, because the large supermarkets are rich, and they will lose very little. And besides they are unjust, unfair, and they are using people to get very rich.
Likewise, he may break various rules of social life. For example, if he unfairly treats family members or colleagues from work, he is doing it because he can think that they should be treated hardly or harshly. So, they deserve it for some previous inappropriate behavior, or they are not prepared enough to live.
Type 1 can be fascinated by people who do something for themselves, regardless of the law and other regulations. And they are able to manage to avoid punishment and any consequences.
Another manifestation of the Unconscious State, there may also be a constant hunger for material things. Reversely, in the Conscious State, he deals mainly with “polishing his perfection”, and he tries to follow the law and unwritten social roles. So, Type 1 in the Unconscious State is devoted more to material things. That is good food, a collection of some goods (which he is not willing to share with). He can also give in to some addictions, which are unworthy of the perfectionist and the right and organized person. Then, it happened to him, for example, to get drunk in secret. When he “sobers up” from his “materiality”, he strives to quickly return to the Conscious State and, among other things, this perfectionism.
3.1.2. — Type 4—Shame, Water, Introverted Feeling.
Typology | Name of the type in given typology |
---|---|
Enneagram | Type 4—Romantic |
Psychological Types by C. G. Jung | Introverted Feeling Type |
Ancient System | No equivalent (the closest temperament—Phlegmatic) Element—Water Element feature—cool, cold |
3.1.2.1. — Type 4 (Introverted Feeling) — Conscious State.
Type 4 in the Conscious State is concrete and competent and gives the impression of being reliable. Type 4 is also keen, eloquent and flexible. This type can create a friendly and pleasant atmosphere around him and be the soul of the company. He is able to keep others attention focused on him. He can advise people well. He can give the impression that he is knowledgeable. In the work which he is doing, he is often unrivaled, and at the same time sincere and dedicated. He is also nice. In sum, these features are making it that nobody pays attention to his mistakes. Even if he makes more mistakes than others.
In general, he likes to be the best at making a great impression on others. When appears someone who is more charming, he starts competing with him. Alternatively, he begins to manipulate the situation in such a way as to regain his priority in making the best impression on the environment. And usually, he manages to do something in this way that others main attention is coming back to him. Others attention is focused again mainly on him. Probably we can say that he is a master in it.
This ability to focus others attention on himself, he uses for using others. It means, he uses it for his purposes. Or to influence others to do something that matters will go on according to his will.
So, he is great at creating a pleasant atmosphere when he is in a company. Or an unpleasant atmosphere, if he acknowledges that it is a necessity. Then, Type 4 is equally good at creating nice and unpleasant atmosphere, because every method is equally useful for keeping someone’s attention on himself. For example, it can be useful when he is working as a teacher. By using the changing emotional atmosphere, probably he is one of the best among all types of characters in taking control over the behavior of students.
In general, it is unusual for Type 4 that even when he appears first time in some environment, only by using his appearance, he is able to focus others attention on him. It looks like that his particular way of being is magically catching others' attention.
For many people, his behavior may sometimes seem illogical, unpredictable and difficult to understand. This is because in his behavior in his Conscious State there are not fixed rules, laws or manners. Type 4 is leading here mainly by his willingness of influencing people. Not other things that may follow people from many other types of characters.
Usually, he can dress well, and this ability, even more, emphasizes his distinction from the environment. In general, he is interested in all things that are associated with influence and creating the attractive atmosphere. For example, fashion, food, and so to say some “magical knowledge”, which can he use to influence others.
3.1.2.2. — Type 4 (Introverted Feeling) — Strong Self-Esteem State (Power State)
In the Strong Self-Esteem State, Type 4 often becomes similar to Type 12. He can then take of himself, or he is able to demand his needs. He can use his knowledge and skills to get what he wants (or avoid what he does not wish to). He can be very concrete and convincing. And then it is actually hard to deny him anything. He can manipulate arguments and emotions in this way that people are in some way so overpowered and somewhat so enchanted that they do what Type 4 wants. Sometimes Type 4 is even able get someone to this point that he will be “eating out of his hand”.
Another manifestation the behavior of Type 4 in Strong Self-Esteem State is incredible honesty and kindness. He can then do something very nice. For example, he can make a great party with delicious food and fabulous atmosphere, which Type 4 is able to produce and maintain as long as he needs. If he cannot do parties, instead he is able to organize a lovely time in many ways. He also likes donates and support others. For example, he can give some gifts, give good advice, help with something, do something for somebody, etc. Type 4 has great satisfaction when he is giving others what they really need, and they are very grateful for it. He can also comfort others or give them new strength with a kind word, conversation, his knowledge, experience, etc.
3.1.2.3. — Type 4 (Introverted Feeling) — Soft Self-Esteem State (Vulnerable State).
Type 4 in his Soft Self-Esteem State often becomes similar to Type 1. And then, for example, suffers and is angry because of some injustice, and if somebody or something was not fair to him. Type 4 can then faultlessly show somebody his wrongs. And he does it so effectively that no one is able to challenge him and find any gaps in his reasoning. At the same time, Type 4 can create a very strong emotional tension that for others is hard to bear. Because of this, others are often unable to focus enough and are unable to show that something may be wrong with reasoning which at this moment has Type 4. Often discussing with Type 4 in this state, becomes completely pointless. It is like proverbial “wasting one's breath”. Then, whatever you say, it can be immediately “used against you”. So it remains only to wait until the emotions of Type 4 drops. Or leave Type 4 completely alone, if we are fed up with such an inability to establish with him some real and constructive contact.
The above approach may also have positive sides because it works great when you need to defend a just cause. Then, Type 4 with his great emotions and unshakable attitude can sometimes make remarkable things, and deal with such critical problems that no other type will be able to do. This is due, among other things, to the fact that Type 4 probably has the highest resistance to emotional coldness. The emotional coldness that other people can emanate or express toward him.
3.1.2.4. — Type 4 (Introverted Feeling) — Unconscious State
In the Unconscious State, Type 4 becomes similar to opposite to him Type 7. Then, unlike his typical behavior in the Conscious State, he may play well at the expense of others. For example, he may ignore others’ feelings and honor. He also becomes irresponsible, unreliable, unworthy of trust, etc.
Type 4 during his Unconscious State can also be guided by strong beliefs. These beliefs can be connected to some area of knowledge, religion, art, etc. It means he can believe in the roles of faith, logical order, common-sense, fashion trend, etc. At that time he can passionately study the works of people whom he considers to be an indisputable authority. Or he can “ignite” to some action, and he can be very devoted to it.
Type 4 can also tend to experience strong impressions. This tendency may, e.g., manifest itself in a strong desire to watch hard dramas, misfortunes, horrors. For example, about ghosts, psychopaths, bad luck, despite the paralyzing fear. Besides Type 4 may expose himself to dangerous situations. Next, he may be able to manage to get out of these situations. Sometimes he can do it in some extraordinary way or with the help of a superhero… It means, he hopes that someone will appear. Someone who will always support him in need, regardless of whether he is doing good or bad.
Type 4 has an everlasting deficit of some indisputable and entirely correct principle that could be absolutely certain. All his life he wants to find people with authority who will not disappoint him and always be loyal to him. But people like this do not exist. So from, time to time he is frustrated, he feels cheated and rejected.
The effect of this may be, for example, that he will have too little faith in other people. And he will expect rather a disloyalty from others than loyalty. Such an approach can discourage even those people who try to be loyal to him. Then, they can sometimes lose motivation to be loyal and devoted to him. But when others lose motivation to be loyal and devoted to Type 4, he can be more disappointed than before. And he has the impression that nobody can be trusted. So here we have a vicious circle.
Type 4 can even be disappointed regarding people who are well-recognized authorities if he will find that they made some big mistakes or they are not honorable enough. It makes the impression that those authorities are harming him. And this harm is directed especially towards him. So, in this way, in the opinion of Type 4, those authorities actually betrayed and cheated on him.
Then, Type 4 sometimes has a problem with looking at people with a distance. He is valuing them too much. He is doing it, even though that in total no one is perfect and usually everyone has some disgraceful pages in his biography. Moreover, also Type 4 such infamous pages often has.
3.1.3. — Type 12 — Sorrow, Earth, Extraverted Sensing.
Typology | Name of the type in given typology |
---|---|
Enneagram | No equivalent |
Psychological Types by C. G. Jung | Extraverted Sensing Type |
Ancient System | No equivalent (the closest temperament—Melancholic) Element—Earth Element feature—dry |
3.1.3.1. — Type 12 (Extraverted Sensing) — Conscious State.
In the Conscious State, Type 12 is unrivaled in situations that require self-control and taking risks. He seems to be resistant to fear and difficult, tense situations. At the same time, he does not lose cold blood and gives the impression of being relaxed. Most of the other types earlier than him lose their courage, invention, are overwhelmed by fear, resentment, indignation, etc.
He can also be super caring for people who are “with him” and he compassion-less for people who are “against him. He can be very devoted to the cause he serves. He does not discourage easily by failures. His behavior is a bit like a character—Robin Hood, that is, for example, he can steal something (or fix illegally) and give it to his good friends.
He likes to act on the border of the law and constantly check how far he can go beyond the law without consequences. He mainly does this for material things. He gives the impression that the tension connected with risky situations does not tire him. And actually, it looks like that it gives him the will to live.
Often he can put others in the belief that he controls everything, what he is doing. Even then when in reality he has little control about over it, what is happening around him?
In life, he is guided mainly by tangible things that he can possess. Or he is interested in mastering the skills that can lead him to get these desirable things. He will not rather deal with things that will not lead to something special. So, he does not like any weird or imaginative problems. Some talking about principles, laws, abstraction, art, etc. These are not concrete things. It is not known why others deal with it? It is strange that they are doing it if they do not know whether they will get any specific benefits?
3.1.3.2. — Type 12 (Extraverted Sensing) — Strong Self-Esteem State (Power State)
In the Strong Self-Esteem State this type often becomes type 7. Then, for example, he can be helpful, he can add others encouragement or good cheer, he can prompt to action, he can become childlike, he can be very approachable, entertaining, etc. Generally, he seeks to get in touch with others. He is able to encourage others to do something together. He can be a great organizer and motivator of some common activities.
Another manifestation of Type 12’s Strong Self-Esteem State may be taking hazardous actions. For example, drinking alcohol at work, stealing something, persuade betrayal, being immoral, etc. He likes to use his position, knowledge or skills to use others, and he may really enjoy it. Then, he thinks that he is bright and cunning. He also often disregard and do not respect the people who let him kidding them.
3.1.3.3. — Type 12 (Extraverted Sensing) — Soft Self-Esteem State (Vulnerable State).
In the Soft Self-Esteem State, Type 12 often becomes Type 4. Then, for example, he suffers greatly when he thinks that somebody or some people made something against him (e.g., some wickedness). And because of his suffering, he often struggles against this wickedness. And also he often looks for allies in his fight. He can be grumpy and unpleasant at the time. He is also able to make life difficult for his enemy. Then often he does not care about the risks and unpleasant consequences that he or his supporters may face.
If Type 12 at the same time will be cut off from reality, and he will feel like a victim of fate, he can be guided by his will to take revenge. The revenge for his sense of grievance (whether real or imagined). Then, both Type 12 and others who will be under his influence may lead to severe problems. For example, problems with the law, finances, cooperation with partners, co-existence with others, etc.
On the other hand, however, if Type 12 has positive intentions, he is often able to encourage others to keep their focus on various important problems. Then, he can influence others in this way that he often can get their interest and help. And even from time to time he is able to get their active involvement in solving the most significant problems. Such influence on others can bring many positive effects for both, him and others.
3.1.3.4. — Type 12 (Extraverted Sensing) — Unconscious State
In the Unconscious State, Type 12 becomes opposite to him Type 1. He is fascinated by fair and righteous actions. He can strive to be perfect and not too earth-bounded. That is not too focused on material and profitable things. Then, he can speak to others very convincingly and be very gallant.
He can also talk beautifully and suggestively about the harms that he got from others. Then often he becomes the enemy of those people who were unjust toward him.
In the Unconscious State, Type 12 may like to be somewhere in retreat place. It will be good if, for example, it will be his comfortable, well-decorated room or some really private space. However, even if he is living or resides in somebody's house, he can somehow organize comfortable for him conditions. And when the conditions for him are good enough, he is doing something for himself. For example, he can devote himself to various thoughts, his hobbies, and interests, develop his skills, etc. Thanks to this, he may secretly get various skills. Next, these skills he uses in his other states for different purposes.
3.1.4. — Type 7 — Fear, Fire, Extraverted Thinking.
Typology | Name of the type in given typology |
---|---|
Enneagram | Type 7—Epicure |
Psychological Types by C. G. Jung | Extraverted Thinking Type |
Ancient System | No equivalent (the closest temperament—Choleric) Element—Fire Element feature—hot |
3.1.4.1. — Type 7 (Extraverted Thinking) — Conscious State.
In the Conscious State, Type 7 often behaves like an incurable optimist. He often has a happy expression on his face. And he creates the impression that there is nothing to worry about in life. He can work well in professions where there is some risk, and we have to be very focused on our aim. At the time, his incurable optimism is very helpful for him and others who cooperate with him. That is, it is useful that he creates the impression that he did not feel any danger. Thanks to this, often in the better or worse way, but usually effective, he is able to take control of the stressful situation. And other people with whom he is in this dangerous situation also feel safer. It is like some kind of caring ghost who is taking care of them. And thanks to this ghost nothing will happen to anyone. Indeed, he suits the fairy-tale Peter Pan who does something extraordinary, and he is good at it. At the same time, he is guided by his strong beliefs and focuses his attention on his matters. That is he lives in his fairy-tale world.
Type 7 gives the impression that he does not bother with the company of people. And probably he can stay or work with people actually all the time. Often, even when he is working with people a lot, he is able to meet with friends and colleagues after work. Actually, he is ready to spend time with everyone with whom he can fix, deal or transact matters what he is interested in.
Typically, this type works a lot, is active and likes to move from one place to another. It happens to him that he takes too much work and duties. It shows his incurable optimism. It means, he thinks that he may do more than in reality he is able to do. This is because Type 7 has his own beliefs, which he holds, despite the circumstances that he deals with. That is, he follows these beliefs regardless of whether these beliefs fit given life situation or not.
So, it is a kind of faith. Because regardless of whether he is a religious person one not, he believes in some of his own conceptions about life, which he follows.
When the opportunity arises, he likes to transfer his beliefs to others. For example, he encourages or even sometimes provokes discussions about his opinions and points of view. In his deducting or argumentation he is very strict and logical, but this logic serves him mainly to justify his own views. Often his believes are adapted to what he likes and preferences. Besides, he is very talkative. It looks like that chatting is not tiring him at all.
3.1.4.2. — Type 7 (Extraverted Thinking) — Strong Self-Esteem State (Power State)
In the Strong Self-Esteem State, Type 7 often becomes Type 1. In the Enneagram this type is called—the Perfectionist. So, Type 7 in this state is willing to take tasks and challenges that require some mastery or a lot of practice. E.g., cooking, mechanics, various crafts, etc. Then, he polishes up his skills and becomes better and better in them.
It is interesting that thanks to the fact that he can be the Perfectionist in his Strong Self-Esteem State, often he is able to face many works or tasks. It is especially interesting according to this fact that in his Conscious State he is often ambitious. He undertakes and obligates to do a lot of tasks. So, his perfection attitude helps him to fulfill his obligations. Besides, being good at something gives him energy and drives him to take on different new challenges and goals.
From time to time, however, it happens that he is unable to cope with everything he undertakes. Then, he tries somehow to make others take over his job and duties, which he is unable to manage. Usually, in the beginning, he is trying to prompt others nicely to take his problems. But if he cannot make someone do something for him in a nice way, then he tries different methods. It means, he tries to knit in or use others to do something for him. Such actions can make this effect, that others will see him as irresponsible, unjust and reckless.
3.1.4.3. — Type 7 (Extraverted Thinking) — Soft Self-Esteem State (Vulnerable State).
In the Soft Self-Esteem State, Type 7, often becomes type 12. That is, he is focused on earthly matters. So, he likes to eat something good and have fun. He cannot avoid alcohol or other stimulants. In general, he is willing to take or “indulge” many pleasures, amusements, entertainments, recreations, etc., to improve his mood.
He suffers a lot when he loses something material. E.g., when he gets a smaller payment than he should. When he feels cheated, he may not see a big problem in getting something in not fairway, or even by stealing something. He wants by this kind of action to take revenge to pay the balance.
3.1.4.4. — Type 7 (Extraverted Thinking) — Unconscious State
In the Unconscious State, Type 7 moves to opposite Type 4. Then, Type 7 is very emotional and impulsive what usually is unlike to him. He leaves for some time beliefs and convictions, which he has in his Conscious State. Instead, he becomes romantic and nostalgic. This is it what Type 7 is missing for. Unconsciously, he constantly looks for people who will help him to achieve his hidden romantic attitude. However, it is difficult for him looking for romantic people consciously. With his conscious attitude and believes it is hard to attract such people. And even if he attracts someone like that, it will be difficult for him to keep this relationship for a long time.
What is the reason for this?
For example, if Type 7 is a man, and he is looking for a romantic woman, his conscious influence is heading him to the opposite kind of woman. It means, he will rather focus on a woman who prefers physicality or sexuality than romance and deep emotions. And then there is only “a moment of forgetfulness, which does not hurt any hearts”. Well, but it was not this, what Type 7 unconsciously was expected.
If, however, he manages to find someone romantic, he will experience deep feelings and elation of heart. He will also suffer as romantics. Then, when he enjoys to the full that kind of feeling, he will be satisfied. But next, he usually wakes up from this state, and quickly he returns to his typical Conscious State.
During events or parties, he also sometimes is able to create some romantic atmosphere. But the parties, unfortunately, end very quickly. And the hunger for romance is still unsatisfied or repeatedly is returning.
