8.10. Sociotypes—modifications.

In the chapters:
— Update1.36 — Soft versions of adaptive-defensive mechanisms,
— 33. Areas of adaptive-defensive mechanisms,
I presented the following diagram:

In the diagram above, the circle inside is broken into sixteen circular sectors. 8 wider and 8 narrower.

The eight wider circular sectors are labeled:

  • Ne — extraverted iNtuition,
  • Ni — introverted iNtuition,
  • Se — extraverted Sensation,
  • Si — introverted Sensation,
  • Te — extraverted Thinking,
  • Ti — introverted Thinking,
  • Fe — extraverted Feeling,
  • Fi — introverted Feeling.

These eight elements are named differently in different personality theories. It means:
— in Myers-Briggs Indicator, they are called — Cognitive Functions
— in John Beebe’s model (Eight Function-Attitude, Eight Archetype Model), they are called — Function-Attitudes.
— and in Socionics, they are called — Information Elements.

As a reminder, below I a table and diagram showing Socionics’ Information Elements.

In the above table on the right, we have eight Information Elements. On the left side, there are four Information Functions. These functions are analogical to the basic psychological functions distinguished by Jung. All in all, in Socionics, we have these four functions:
— I — Intuition (analogical to “Intuition” by Jung),
— S — Sensorics (analogical to “Sensation” by Jung),
— L — Logic (analogical to “Thinking” by Jung),
— E — Ethics (analogical to “Feeling” by Jung).

Below we can see a graphical representation of the above table.

So, in Socionics, there are distinguished eight main elements (or areas). In the Mandala of Characters, however, we have 12 main areas. This is because, in the Mandala, in addition to the 8 areas highlighted above, there are four more that occupy four basic psychological functions.

I write more about it, among others, in the chapters mentioned at the beginning of this chapter.

All in all, to adapt the Socionics’ Information Elements to the Mandala of Characters, I had to modify them somehow, And I did it as we can see in the diagram below.

Above, between the eight Information Elements (wider circular sectors), we can see 8 more additional elements (narrower circular sectors).

In the areas occupied by narrow circular sectors in the Mandala of Characters there are four basic psychological functions. That is, Intuition, Sensation, Thinking, and Feeling.

Due to the fact that Socionics does not distinguished areas occupied by basic psychological functions, I decided to divide these functions into soft or light versions of Information Elements. The word “soft” or “light” comes from the fact that in the areas of basic psychological functions, Information Elements are less influential. This is simply because in the areas of basic psychological functions, the greatest influence have basic psychological functions.

So, in general, in the areas of basic psychological functions, I distinguished the following light versions of Information Elements:

  • Soft I — that is, soft Intuition of potentialities,
or soft Ne — that is, soft Extratic Intuition (or extraverted iNtuition)
  • Soft T — that is, soft Intuition of time,
or soft Ni — that is, soft Introtic Intuition (or introverted iNtuition).
  • Soft F — that is, soft force (volitional) Sensorics,
or soft Se — that is, soft Extratic Sensorics (or extraverted Sensation).
  • Soft S — that is, soft Perceptive (comfort) Sensorics,
or soft Si — that is, soft Introtic Sensorics (or introverted Sensation).
  • Soft P — that is, soft practical (business, pragmatic) Logic,
or soft Te — that is, soft Extratic Logic (or extraverted Thinking).
  • Soft L — that is, soft structural Logic,
or soft Ti — that is, soft Introtic Logic (or introverted Thinking).
  • Soft E — that is, soft emotional Ethics,
or soft Fe — that is, soft Extratic Ethics (or extraverted Feeling).
  • Soft R — that is, soft Ethics of relations,
or soft Fi — that is, soft Introtic Ethics (or introverted Feeling).

Having the soft version of information elements at our disposal, I can now better match sociotypes (that is, Socionics’ personality types) to the Mandala of Characters.

The first version of sociotypes matched the Mandala, based on original Socionics’ assumptions, I showed in chapter “8.8. Sociotypes”.

Below, I present the second versions of the sociotypes modified by me. It means sociotypes’ versions that I made on the diagrams, where I distinguished soft version of Information Elements, which I presented above.

Let me remind you that I presented the Socionics mental and vital rings using the functions numbers in the Model-A and using arrows. It means:
— Mental ring I presented using black arrows. It means the movement between the relevant information elements in the mental ring is marked with black arrows.
— The movement between the relevant information elements in the vital ring is marked with gray arrows.

Summarizing:
— black arrows—refer to the mental ring,
— gray arrows—refer to the vital ring.

Speech bubbles with letter names of sociotypes indicate a place on the Mandala of Characters where more or less individual sociotypes can be found. These places are identical to those we can find in the MBTI® (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®). However, the approach to and analysis of each personality type in the MBTI® is different than in Socionics.

This shows, for example, that, in Socionics, the sociotype names are formed differently than the type names in MBTI®. I wrote about how these names are created in the chapter “8.8. Sociotypes”.

Besides, Socionics takes into account the unconscious (that is, Socionics’ vital ring) in descriptions of particular types. In MBTI®, we have no reference to the unconscious.

The Unconscious of individual types in a fascinating way is also shown in John Beebe’s model (namely, Eight Function-Attitude, Eight Archetypes Model). (In the Mandala of Characters, the Unconscious is also represented. That is, in Mandala, the Unconscious represents the Unconscious Triangle).

Another difference between Socionics and MBTI® is that:
— in MBTI®, so-called preferences are used to describe personalities,
— in Socionics, in turn, to describe personalities are used information elements, which take part in information metabolism.

Apart from the differences that we have between MBTI® and Socionics, I think two important facts are worth paying attention to:
— Socionics is a typology younger that MBTI®,
— MBTI® is one of the foundations on which Socionics is built.

Other foundations of Socionics are Sigmund Freud’s and Carl Gustav Jung’s ideas, and the concept of information metabolism created by Antoni Kępiński.

I think it is worth mentioning here that both MBTI® and Socionics are developing increasingly. More and more works about them are published. Both have a growing group of enthusiasts and supporters. So, both theories have more and more to offer.

Therefore, I will return to Socionics’ types, and I will show how they look like on the Mandala of Characters with the use of the soft version of Information Elements.

So, please take a look at the following modified sociotype diagrams.

So, above, I showed 16 sociotypes on the Mandala of characters using the soft versions of Information Elements.

At the end of this chapter, I will remind the diagram with the word names of all 16 sociotypes.

I placed the above sociotypes around the Mandala. However, please remember that in Socionics, the name of individual sociotypes comes from their Ego-blocks. The Ego-block consists of the program and the creative function. Generally speaking, the name of sociotype comes from the conscious and leading part of the psyche of a given type.

The analogical principle I also used to name types in the Mandala of Characters. That is, in Mandala name of a given type comes from its Conscious State.

Therefore, the points corresponding to the sociotypes that I indicated in the diagram above are approximate equivalents of Ego-blocks in Models-A for particular sociotypes.
